Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt ist einer der führenden Cellisten seiner Generation, unserer Zeit.

Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt konnte schon während seines Studiums bei David Geringas und Aldo Parisot bei zahlreichen Wettbewerben auf sich aufmerksam machen: So verlieh ihm beim Internationalen Rostropovitch-Wettbewerb die Jury unter dem Vorsitz von Mstislav Rostropovitch den Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris und zusätzlich den Preis für zeitgenössische Musik. Zudem gewann er den Preis des Deutschen Musikwettbewerbs in Bonn und den 1. Preis beim International Australasian Cello Competition in Neuseeland. Er ist Preisträger des Internationalen Tschaikowsky-Wettbewerbs in Moskau sowie des International Leonrad Rose Cello Competition in den USA. Seitdem konzertierte Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt in Europa, Rußland und den USA als Solist mit renommiertesten Orchestern, wie u.a. dem Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, dem Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, dem Deutschen Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, der Radiophilharmonie des NDR, dem Philharmonischen Staatsorchester Hamburg, der Sinfonia Varsovia, dem Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, dem Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, den Rundfunkorchestern von Prag und Ljubljana, den Baltimore und Houston Symphony Orchestras sowie dem Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra und der Philharmonia Prag unter Dirigenten wie Charles Dutoit, Marek Janowski, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Yutaka Sado, Hugh Wolff, Jiri Belohlavek, Vassili Sinaiski, Gerd Albrecht, Andrey Boreyko, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Gabriel Feltz, Michael Sanderling, Markus Poschner und Fabrice Bollon. Ebenso ist er gern gesehener Gast u.a. bei den Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspielen, beim Rheingau-Musikfestival und beim Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival, wo er bereits zusammen mit Christoph Eschenbach konzertierte. Intensiv widmet sich Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt auch der Kammermusik, wo er mit bedeutenden Künstlern wie Lang Lang, Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Nikolaj Znaider, Leonidas Kavakos, Kyoko Takezawa, Miriam Fried, Edgar Meyer und David Shifrin auftrat. Zudem war er Mitglied der Chamber Music Society Two of Lincoln Center in New York und bildet mit Jens Peter Maintz das Cello-Duo “Cello Duello”. Konzerte der vergangenen Spielzeiten führten ihn in die Berliner Philharmonie, in die Alte Oper Frankfurt, in die Philharmonie am Gasteig und den Herkulessaal München, ins Kennedy Center Washington, in die Carnegie Hall sowie die Alice Tully Hall in New York, ins Theatre de Chatelet und Theatre de Champs Elysee in Paris, die Wigmore Hall London, Prags Rudolfinum sowie Tokyos Suntory Hall. Im September 2001 erschien bei Sony Classical seine CD “French Impressions”, im September 2004 folgte ebenfalls bei Sony Classical seine in der Presse hochgelobte Einspielung der Cellokonzerte von Sergei Prokofiev. Im letzten Jahr erschien seine Einspielung der Cellokonzerte von Schumann und Elgar bei Sony Classical. Beim Label Capriccio erschien zudem seine Aufnahme von Blochs “Voice in the Wilderness” mit dem Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt wurde 2013 mit dem Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik und dem Diapason d’Or für seine Einspielung des Klaviertquartetts von Carl Maria von Weber (mit Isabelle Faust, Boris Faust und Alexander Melnikov) ausgezeichnet. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt spielt auf einem Violoncello von Matteo Gofriller aus dem ehemaligen Besitz von Hugo Becker.

Course services

  • At least 3 individual lessons
  • Piano accompanist — a professional piano accompanist will be provided during the master class and for the performances.
  • Participant auditions — each participant has the opportunity to perform his / her finished repertoire for any upcoming competitions, concerts or auditions on one of the evenings during the master class. Please contact us for the wished audition by email.
  • Final concert — the participants of the master class can perform at the final concert after the end of the master class in order to present the program of the master class to the public and perform it publicly. One or another professor, at his discretion, will perform with the participants in duets or chamber music ensembles. The audience will present the Audience Award to the best artist of the concert under the condition, that at least ten visitors, who have purchased a ticket, attend a concert.
  • Career Advice — the tutor and director will be happy to advise you on topics such as studies, concerts, competitions, scholarships, auditions, management and self-management, and instrument procurement. Please contact us informally by e-mail for that.
  • Concert events in Berlin for the selected participants — the selected participants of the master class, chosen by the professor and the leadership of the Academy, will soon be offered a solo concert in Berlin. The date will be agreed with the artist.
  • Audience Award — directly after the final concert, an audience award in the amount of 50% of the entrance fees in cash as well as a certificate will be awarded to the participant selected by the audience under the condition, that at least ten visitors, who have purchased a ticket, attend a concert.
  • Two scholarships — with twelve or more master class participants, two scholarships in the amount of the participation fee will be awarded to two of the best students selected by the professor and the leadership of the academy after the final concert, including a certificate.

Performance with an orchestra

All participants in Berlin now have the option to perform with a chamber orchestra for the additional price of 490 € – 20 min., 700 € – 30 min. (this price includes a professional multi-angle video recording of your performance with 3 cameras). This option requires the registration of at least three participants so that the concert with chamber orchestra can take place. The decision to hold this concert will be communicated to you immediately after the minimum number of registrations for this option has been reached. Otherwise you will receive a refund for this option. Participation in the master class is not dependent on this option.
